A burglary worth around ₹1.25 crore took place at a residence near Ultadanga railway station in Kolkata, barely 300 metres from the Ultadanga police station. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when miscreants entered the house by cutting through the window grille. The affected family includes an elderly couple who were asleep inside the flat during the break-in.
The house is located on the main road near Ultadanga station. According to family members, the robbers entered through a broken window grille and transferred all valuables from one room to another before looting them. The flat was not locked from outside, as the residents were present inside and sleeping at the time. The robbers reportedly took gold and diamond jewellery along with cash.
The family suspects the use of a sedative, as both elderly members—one a heart patient and the other diabetic—remained asleep throughout the incident, which they said was unusual. The couple's son said, “My father is a heart patient and my mother is diabetic. They never sleep through the night. But on that day, both slept until morning.”
The theft was discovered at around 6:30 AM when the mother woke up and found the window grille broken and the house ransacked. Family members estimated the total loss to be ₹1.25 crore, which included jewellery and cash. A woman from the family said, “We didn’t wake up all night. Everything is gone—cash, jewellery. Not a single item is left.”
Following the incident, concerns have been raised over the security arrangements in the area, particularly with the house being so close to the police station and situated on a busy road. The burglars managed to operate inside the home for a long period without being detected or interrupted.
