₹60,168 cr investment to revamp Bengal's rail network with 43 ongoing projects

The Indian Railways has allocated ₹60,168 crore for the development of 43 projects across West Bengal, aiming to enhance rail infrastructure. As of April 1, 2024, these projects are at various stages, ranging from planning to construction, and are being executed under the Eastern Railway, South Eastern Railway, and North Eastern Railway zones. The objective is to modernize the railway system, improve connectivity, and boost operational efficiency across the state.

One of the major initiatives includes the construction of 1,087 kilometers of new railway lines, of which 322 kilometers have already been completed. Additionally, 1,201 kilometers of track are being converted into broad gauge, with 854 kilometers of the work completed. Gauge conversion is a key component of these upgrades, as it will enable the operation of faster trains and better connectivity with the national rail network.

A significant part of the ongoing work involves the expansion of the railway network. The construction of 2,192 kilometers of double and multi-lane tracks is underway, with 479 kilometers already finished. This expansion is crucial for reducing congestion on busy routes and accommodating an increasing number of trains. These improvements are designed to handle both passenger and freight traffic more efficiently, thus improving overall service delivery.

The projects also include several high-priority lines aimed at enhancing regional connectivity. These include the new lines between Nabadwip Ghat and Nabadwip Dham, and between Chandneswar and Jaleswar. Additionally, a third line is being added between Naihati and Ranaghat, and a new line is being built between Balurghat and Hili. These lines are essential for improving local connectivity, reducing travel time, and supporting economic activity in the state.

In addition to track construction, key bypass projects are underway at Saythiya and Sitarampur, aimed at decongesting high-traffic areas and improving train movement. These bypasses will ensure smoother flow of trains, reduce delays, and help in maintaining a consistent schedule for both passenger and freight trains. As the projects progress, the upgraded rail network is expected to significantly improve the speed, capacity, and safety of rail services, benefiting millions of commuters and contributing to the state’s economic development.
