As tensions begin to ease across violence-hit Murshidabad and Malda districts of West Bengal, Additional Director General (ADG) Javed Shamim delivered a strong message to those responsible for the unrest related to the Waqf Bill. In a press conference on Monday, he declared, “Everyone who is guilty will be caught,” affirming that no one involved in the chaos will be spared.
The disturbances, which shook areas like Shamsherganj, Dhulian, and Jangipur, had left communities stunned and residents displaced. ADG Shamim confirmed that while the situation is improving, full normalcy is yet to return. “The displaced are slowly returning home. Shops are gradually reopening. Route marches are being conducted to restore confidence,” he stated.
Despite the gradual reopening of marketplaces and signs of calm, the administration has maintained a strict stance. Internet services remain suspended in affected areas due to the persistent circulation of misinformation, particularly from outside the state. “The influence of rumors has not yet reduced. That’s why internet suspension is still necessary,” the ADG said.
Law enforcement has already made significant progress in controlling the situation. Over 200 individuals have been arrested so far in connection with the violence. Authorities believe the violence may have been triggered by deliberate provocation, although investigations are ongoing to confirm this angle.
Meanwhile, social media continues to play a disruptive role. Several unverified posts and videos originating from outside West Bengal are being flagged by authorities. The administration has urged the public to refrain from spreading unconfirmed information that may incite further unrest.
The overall atmosphere, while stabilizing, remains tense. Both state and district-level authorities are closely monitoring developments and have vowed to act firmly against those found guilty, whether they were on the ground or behind the scenes.
