'Asking questions not anarchy', Mamata hits back at Modi over JU jibe, cites NIRF rankings on 'glory' remark

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday strongly defended Jadavpur University and its students, responding sharply to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s criticism during an election rally. In a social media post, she questioned the tone of the Prime Minister’s remarks and reaffirmed the institution’s academic reputation, stating that questioning and student protests are integral to a functioning democracy.

Reacting to the allegations, Mamata said that Jadavpur University has consistently ranked among the top institutions in the country, as reflected in government rankings over the years. She expressed disappointment over what she described as an attack on “brilliant students,” asking whether such remarks reflect the expected courtesy and decency from a national leader. Emphasizing democratic values, she said that student movements should not be equated with disorder.

She further stated that “questioning is not anarchy,” asserting that the ability to question authority is a sign of education and intellectual growth. Highlighting the merit-based system of the university, she added that students earn their place through hard work and carry forward a tradition of critical thinking, which should be respected rather than criticised.

The Chief Minister also widened the political attack by referring to the situation in Manipur, stating that ignoring ongoing crises while focusing solely on elections reflects a deeper issue. Her remarks came hours after the Prime Minister alleged that anti-national slogans were being written on the Jadavpur University campus and accused the state government of failing to maintain order, intensifying the political confrontation ahead of the elections.
