Tragedy struck early Tuesday morning in front of Newtown’s iconic Gol Building as a young biker was critically injured in a shocking sequence of road events. The incident occurred around 3:30 am on the first day of Bengali New Year, leaving the rider in a critical condition.
According to police, a four-wheeler was parked along the roadside near the Gol Building with one of its doors open. A speeding bike rammed into the open door, flinging the rider onto the road. Before he could recover, another vehicle coming from the opposite direction ran over him.
The biker, identified as Birju alias Sujan, originally from Assam, was first rushed to Bidhannagar Sub-Divisional Hospital. Given the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to RG Kar Hospital in a critical condition. Officials said Birju lived in a rented house in Vivekananda Palli, Jatragachhi, Newtown.
Police from Newtown police station arrived promptly at the scene and began an investigation. Both the drivers involved in the incident were arrested on the spot, and their vehicles were seized for forensic examination.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the bike was being driven at a high speed and the sudden appearance of an open car door led to the chain reaction. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to confirm the sequence of events.
The incident has once again raised concerns about late-night vehicle movement and road safety norms, especially in urban hotspots like Newtown where traffic is unpredictable even at odd hours.
