'Biswas brothers' removed from Suruchi Sangha committee, , BJP MLA named secretary

Suruchi Sangha has reconstituted its Durga Puja committee ahead of this year's festival, removing the names of Aroop Biswas and Swarup Biswas from the new committee. Sourav Sikdar, BJP MLA from Dum Dum North and a resident of New Alipore, has been appointed secretary of the committee. The newly formed panel also includes BJP South District President Anupam Bhattacharya. According to the committee, the Khuti Puja will be held on July 16, coinciding with Rath Yatra.

After assuming charge, Sourav Sikdar said the Durga Puja would retain its traditional format but would no longer be associated with "VIP culture." He stated that Suruchi Sangha would now organise a community-oriented Durga Puja where local residents could participate without fear. He also said the committee was reconstituted by local residents and includes both prominent members of society and ordinary residents from the area.

Suruchi Sangha is one of South Kolkata's prominent Durga Puja organisers and has long been associated with former Sports Minister Aroop Biswas. Sourav Sikdar alleged that local residents had previously faced problems due to extortion, syndicate activities, and disputes related to vehicles and land, prompting the formation of a new committee. The report also states that Aroop Biswas is facing legal proceedings in connection with the Messi event and other cases, while Swarup Biswas is currently in judicial custody.
