No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A government programme marking International Mother Language Day at Deshapriya Park in Kolkata turned politically significant after BJP MP Ananta Maharaj shared the stage with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and criticised his own party. Maharaj, who received the state’s highest civilian honour, ‘Banga Vibhushan,’ said from the dais that the BJP had done nothing for Cooch Behar and the Rajbanshi community, while thanking the Chief Minister for the recognition.
His remarks have stirred political circles, particularly in the run-up to the Assembly elections, where North Bengal remains a key battleground. By publicly expressing dissatisfaction with the BJP’s performance on Rajbanshi concerns, Maharaj’s statement is being viewed as a setback for the party in a region considered electorally sensitive.
Ananta Maharaj has long been regarded as an influential leader of the Rajbanshi community and has actively advocated the demand for ‘Greater Cooch Behar.’ In recent months, he has appeared uneasy with sections of the BJP leadership, raising concerns about what he describes as neglect of community interests.
His decision to attend the state function, accept the honour from Mamata Banerjee and make a pointed political remark from the same platform has added to speculation about shifting alignments in North Bengal. The symbolism of the moment has not gone unnoticed across party lines.
With earlier meetings between Maharaj and the Chief Minister on record, and known interactions with senior national leaders, his latest statement is being interpreted as more than routine political criticism. Observers say it could signal evolving electoral equations in the region ahead of the polls.
