No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
Mamata Banerjee has launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), labeling the party a "killer of democracy." Her reaction comes in the wake of consecutive violent incidents targeting two of the party’s most prominent figures in the Lok Sabha. On Saturday, Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s All India General Secretary, faced a hostile mob in Sonarpur. This was followed by a similar incident on Sunday in Chanditala, Hooghly, where Serampore MP Kalyan Banerjee was heckled and pelted with stones while "thief" slogans were raised against him.
In a series of posts on her X (formerly Twitter) handle, Banerjee emphasized the significant constitutional and party roles held by the two leaders. Abhishek Banerjee serves as the leader of the party in the Lok Sabha, while Kalyan Banerjee is the TMC's chief spokesperson in the lower house. By highlighting their positions, the former Chief Minister underscored the gravity of the attacks, suggesting that the targeting of high-ranking representatives is a direct assault on the democratic process itself.
The TMC leader alleged that the harassment and physical violence witnessed over the weekend were far from spontaneous. She claimed that the video evidence from both Sonarpur and Chanditala clearly indicates that these incidents were "planned" by the BJP. According to Banerjee, the sequence of events—ranging from egg-throwing and collar-pulling in Sonarpur to the stoning of Kalyan Banerjee’s convoy in Hooghly—points toward a systematic attempt by the opposition to intimidate TMC leadership and disrupt public order.
