"Changing laws won't cover 12 years of failures": Abhishek Banerjee attacks Centre over paper-leak bill

During the Lok Sabha debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee launched a sharp attack on the Central Government. While confirming TMC’s support for the bill, Banerjee stated that backing the legislation did not mean praising the government for solving a problem of its own creation. He argued that increasing penalties and amending laws serves as an admission of governance failure rather than an effective solution to repeated paper leaks and exam cancellations.

Banerjee emphasized that restoring the trust of students and parents requires systemic accountability rather than merely tightening penal provisions. He noted that every aspirant deserves assurance that success stems from merit and honesty rather than wealth or political influence. According to the TMC leader, forming new committees or amending existing acts fails to bring ground-level improvements if implementation remains weak and examination systems continue to collapse across the country.

Concluding his speech, the TMC MP accused the government of mastering the art of replacing failed administrative systems with new laws whenever governance falters. He remarked that effective governance is measured by tangible outcomes for citizens rather than headlines or legislative changes. Banerjee reiterated that the administration must answer for the millions of affected students whose futures have been disrupted by frequent examination malpractices and administrative lapses over the past 12 years.
