'Cockroach Janta Party' blows past BJP on Instagram, gains 10 million followers in 5 days

India's newest satirical political outfit, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has managed a digital feat that traditional opposition coalitions have spent years trying to achieve. Operating under the handle @cockroachjantaparty, the meme-driven parody movement officially breached the monumental milestone of 10 million Instagram followers on Thursday, doing so within just five days of its inception. The explosive trajectory allowed the virtual entity to easily eclipse the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) official account, which currently hovers around 8.7 million followers, positioning the CJP behind only the Indian National Congress's 13.2 million digital followers.

The digital phenomenon found its genesis on May 16 as an ironic, rage-fueled youth response to highly controversial remarks made by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant. During a Supreme Court bench hearing on May 15 regarding senior advocate designations, the CJI had critically likened sections of chronically online, unemployed individuals to "cockroaches" and "parasites" who resort to social media and RTI activism to attack public institutions. Though the CJI issued a rapid clarification the following day stating his words were misconstrued and aimed strictly at individuals utilizing forged law degrees rather than the nation's youth, the metaphorical spark had already ignited a massive wave of anti-establishment sentiment among frustrated, Gen Z internet users.

The mastermind behind the viral counter-campaign is 30-year-old Abhijeet Dipke, a seasoned public relations student at Boston University and a native of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. Dipke is no stranger to digital warfare, having served as an integral social media volunteer for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) between 2020 and 2023, where he designed high-engagement, meme-heavy political campaigns under the guidance of top party leaders. Seizing on the CJI's vocabulary while celebrating his graduation in Boston, Dipke launched a mock website under the banner "Voice of the Lazy & Unemployed," complete with a radical five-point manifesto demanding bans on post-retirement Rajya Sabha seats for judges, immediate prosecution for voter deletion, and lifetime bans on defecting politicians.
