Muzaffarpur hospital blaze kills 3 patients, leaves 20 injured
A controversy has erupted after actress Shrimoyi Chattaraj alleged harassment during a police naka-checking, claiming that officers searched her belongings in a manner she described as “disrespectful to women.” The incident occurred during a vehicle check near the Tollygunge area, where the actress said her bag was opened and personal items, including medical supplies, were examined.
Shrimoyi said she was returning from a shoot when police stopped her car. Despite explaining that she was unwell, she alleged that her bag was searched thoroughly and her personal belongings were handled insensitively. She also questioned the absence of female police personnel during the search and criticised the manner in which the checking was conducted. Following the incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly criticised the handling of naka-checking during an election rally in Khandaghosh. She said that checking women’s bags and personal belongings in such a way was unacceptable and disrespectful. Referring to the case, she alleged that similar treatment was meted out to the wife of actor Kanchan Mullick and questioned the procedures being followed in the name of election enforcement.
The issue has sparked a wider debate over police conduct during election-related checks. While authorities maintain that such checks are part of security measures, several public figures and citizens have voiced concerns about privacy, dignity, and the need for gender-sensitive procedures during enforcement activities.
