Panic gripped Bidhannagar railway station on Wednesday after a fire scare was reported on a Habra–Sealdah local train as it entered the platform. Thick smoke engulfed a compartment as well as parts of the station premises, triggering alarm among passengers. In fear, several commuters rushed to get off the train, leading to chaotic scenes on the platform.
Two fire engines were pressed into service immediately after authorities were alerted. Railway officials said the situation was brought under control promptly and a major disaster was averted. The exact cause of the smoke is yet to be officially confirmed, but train services were briefly affected as emergency measures were undertaken.
