Calcutta High Court's division bench on Wednesday was hearing the plea of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee against Single Bench order on Defamation row. The single bench of the high court had restrained the chief minister and three other Trinamool leaders from making comments on Raj Bhavan and Governor CV Ananda Bose.
During the hearing, Mamata Banerjee's lawyer, Soumendranath Mukhopadhyay, argued that the High Court's order curtails freedom of speech, emphasizing that the allegations against the Governor were based on public disclosures and media reports. Mukhopadhyay questioned the basis of the defamation charges, asserting the public's right to constitutional transparency and accountability.
Meanwhile, concerns over political reprisal were raised by lawyer Jayant Mitra, representing newly elected MLA Sayantika Banerjee, who expressed fears among elected representatives about visiting Raj Bhavan. Mitra highlighted this apprehension, which has also been echoed by another Trinamool leader, Kunal Ghosh, involved in the case.
The Division Bench is set to reconvene on Thursday at 12:30 pm to further deliberate on Mamata Banerjee's challenge against the High Court's order, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing legal dispute between the Chief Minister and the Governor.
