Coconut prices rise to ₹60 ahead of Chhath Puja as demand surges
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has raised serious allegations against the ruling BJP, accusing it of intentionally igniting communal tensions in Goa. This controversy stems from comments made by former RSS leader Subhash Velingkar, who suggested a “DNA test” of the relics of St. Francis Xavier, Goa's patron saint, and questioned the saint's revered status as “Goencho Saib” (Protector of Goa). These remarks have sparked outrage within the Christian community, leading to widespread protests and multiple complaints against Velingkar.
In a post on X, Gandhi highlighted that “Goa’s appeal lies in its natural beauty and the warmth and hospitality of its diverse and harmonious people.” He expressed concern that “unfortunately, under BJP rule, this harmony is under attack,” emphasizing the detrimental impact of the ruling party’s actions on the state's social fabric. Gandhi also pointed out a broader pattern of similar provocations across India by the Sangh Parivar, alleging that such actions continue with impunity, supported by officials at the highest levels.
Gandhi criticized the BJP's strategy in Goa, stating that it aims to “divide the people while exploiting ecologically sensitive areas.” He accused the party of illegally converting green land and bypassing environmental regulations, which he described as an assault on Goa’s natural and social heritage. His comments reflect a growing concern among various stakeholders about the preservation of Goa’s unique identity and environment amid increasing political tensions.
In response to Velingkar’s inflammatory comments, local political leaders and citizens have organized protests in Old Goa, demanding action against him. An FIR has been filed under Section 299 of the Indian Penal Code for “hurting religious sentiments.” Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant indicated that Velingkar could face similar repercussions to those experienced by Father Bolmax Pereira, a priest previously arrested for making provocative remarks.
