Defence Minister Rajnath Singh issued a blistering warning to Pakistan on Tuesday, reacting to provocative remarks made by Islamabad’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif. Asif had reportedly suggested that Pakistan would retaliate by striking Kolkata in the event of any future military "misadventure" by India. Recalling the 1971 war, Singh reminded the neighboring nation of the consequences it faced 55 years ago when it was split in two. He emphasized that any attempt to "cast an eye on Bengal" would lead to a fragmentation of Pakistan so severe that "only God knows" how many pieces would remain.

The exchange has sparked a massive political firestorm, particularly in West Bengal, which is currently in the grip of high-decibel assembly election campaigning. Singh’s firm stance was aimed at reassuring the citizens of Bengal and asserting India's sovereign might against external threats. The Defence Minister’s comments were also a direct rebuttal to the notion that the Indian government remains passive in the face of cross-border rhetoric, highlighting that India's defense forces are fully prepared to protect every inch of the nation’s territory.

However, the issue also took an internal political turn as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) launched a scathing attack on the BJP leadership. TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of being too preoccupied with "vote prachar" (election campaigning) to defend Bengal’s dignity. Abhishek Banerjee questioned the "56-inch chest" of the Prime Minister, alleging a lack of courage to condemn the specific threat against Kolkata and challenged the Centre to give the Indian Army a free rein to reclaim Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK).
