West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the Central government of tax discrimination, claiming that while Gujarat’s diamond industry is exempt from taxes, essential commodities like cumin from Bengal are subjected to GST. Speaking in the state assembly, she stated, “Diamonds from Gujarat are tax-free, but essential spices like cumin from Bengal are taxed—this is blatant discrimination.” She alleged that such tax policies unfairly impact Bengal’s economy while benefiting select industries in other states.
Banerjee further highlighted the economic strain caused by GST on essential goods, stating that taxation policies were increasing costs for consumers and businesses. She reiterated that the Centre collects significant revenue from Bengal but does not provide adequate financial support in return. She also raised concerns about the taxation structure affecting small businesses and local traders, adding that unfair GST imposition was burdening daily consumers while luxury goods in some states received tax exemptions.
She also brought up the larger issue of revenue-sharing, stating that the Centre should distribute funds more equitably among states. She demanded a review of the GST framework to ensure uniform taxation policies across regions. Banerjee’s remarks come amid ongoing disputes between states and the Centre regarding tax policies and financial allocations.
