A hidden camera discovered in the washroom of a girls' hostel at Gudlavalleru College of Engineering in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, has sparked a major protest among students. The incident has raised serious concerns about student safety and privacy on campus, leading to swift action by authorities.
The protest began late Thursday night after a student reportedly found the hidden camera. Angered by the invasion of their privacy, hundreds of students gathered on campus, chanting slogans like "we want justice" and demanding strict action against those responsible for installing the camera and circulating videos.
According to student reports, over 300 videos were allegedly recorded and shared among the boys' hostel, intensifying the outrage. The situation escalated, prompting the intervention of the police, who detained a final-year engineering student believed to be involved in the incident. The student's identity has not been disclosed, and investigations are ongoing.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered an official inquiry into the matter, ensuring that all necessary steps are taken to address the students' concerns and bring those responsible to justice. A case has already been registered in connection with the incident.
However, the college administration has denied the existence of hidden cameras in the girls' hostel, stating that they are fully cooperating with the police investigation. They also assured students and parents that additional security measures would be implemented on campus to prevent such incidents in the future.
The police have examined the electronic devices of the detained student, including laptops and mobile phones, in the presence of students and college staff. As of now, no incriminating evidence has been found, but the investigation remains active. Krishna District Collector DK Balaji and Superintendent of Police Gangadhar Rao visited the institute to address the situation as the protest continued.
