Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Burrabazar on Thursday afternoon, following the devastating fire at a local hotel that claimed 15 lives. The tragic incident sent shockwaves through the city, with most victims reportedly dying from suffocation. The Chief Minister was accompanied by Fire Minister Sujit Basu and Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma during her inspection of the site.
The fire broke out while Mamata Banerjee was touring Digha. Upon hearing the news, she remained in constant contact with both the Fire Minister and senior police officials. Her visit to the site was marked by visible concern and swift directives.
While addressing the press, the Chief Minister stated that the hotel where the fire broke out would be sealed. Mamata said that no one will be spared for negligence. She also expressed her concern over how the closed doors of the hotel had obstructed fire brigade operations. "The firemen had to struggle to get in," she said, highlighting possible lapses in safety compliance.
The CM also drew attention to the poor condition of several adjacent houses. She pointed to one nearby building, remarking that its roof appeared ready to collapse. She called on the police, fire department, and the municipal corporation to coordinate efforts to assist the residents.
Mamata suggested that arrangements should be made to temporarily relocate the affected families while their houses are repaired or made safe. She emphasized the need for a joint effort to avoid further tragedies in densely populated areas like Burrabazar.
The hotel in question has reportedly been operating since 1989. Authorities are now examining whether it had proper fire safety certifications. Investigations are underway, and action is expected against those responsible for the negligence that led to such a high death toll.
