“I can resign for her”: Humayun Kabir says Mamata can return to Assembly from Rejinagar

Former MLA and Aam Janata Unnayan Party leader Humayun Kabir has offered to help Mamata Banerjee return to the West Bengal Assembly by vacating his Rejinagar seat and allowing her to contest a by-election. Kabir said that if Mamata Banerjee wishes to return to the legislature, he is prepared to resign from the constituency and facilitate her candidature.

Speaking about the proposal, Kabir said Mamata Banerjee would not win from Nandigram but could enter the Assembly through Rejinagar if she chose to contest from there. He stated that he would step down from one of the seats he won in the 2026 Assembly election and create the vacancy required for a by-election.

Kabir won both the Nowda and Rejinagar Assembly constituencies in the recent election. Referring to Mamata Banerjee’s political situation, he said he was distressed by the circumstances she currently faces and added that his political career had been shaped by her support. He also claimed that his influence in Rejinagar remained strong and that local voters would follow his political direction.

The proposal comes at a time when the Trinamool Congress is dealing with political challenges following the Assembly election results. Mamata Banerjee has been attempting to re-establish her position after contesting from Nandigram, while the party has also faced internal disagreements and organisational issues in recent weeks.

Humayun Kabir was previously associated with the Trinamool Congress after winning Rejinagar as a Congress candidate in 2011. He later joined the ruling party and served as a minister before disputes with the leadership led to his expulsion. He subsequently launched the Aam Janata Unnayan Party in late 2025 and campaigned against the Trinamool Congress during the 2026 Assembly election.
