The Indian Under-19 Women’s Cricket team clinched the inaugural Asia Cup title on Sunday, December 22, defeating Bangladesh by 41 runs in a thrilling final at the Bayuemas Oval, Kuala Lumpur. Gongadi Trisha’s resilient half-century and a remarkable bowling effort helped secure the historic win.
After being put to bat first, India managed to post a modest total of 117 for seven. The innings was anchored by Trisha, who scored a gutsy 52 off 47 balls, including five fours and two sixes. Despite early support from skipper Niki Prasad and a late surge by Mithila Vinod, India’s batting lineup struggled against the disciplined Bangladeshi bowlers. Fast bowler Farjana Easmin’s four-wicket haul and Nishita Akter’s crucial breakthroughs kept the Indian batters in check.
Bangladesh’s chase started on shaky ground, losing early wickets, including skipper Sumaiya Akter, who fell to Sonam Yadav’s excellent bowling. Although Fahomida Choya and Juairiya Ferdous attempted to steady the innings with scores of 18 and 22, the Indian bowlers proved too strong. Aayushi Shukla, the tournament’s top wicket-taker, once again shone, picking up three wickets for just 17 runs.
Sonam Yadav and Parunika Sisodia contributed with two wickets each, dismantling Bangladesh’s batting lineup. Bangladesh collapsed dramatically, losing their last seven wickets for just 21 runs in 40 balls, sealing India’s dominant victory.
India’s triumph was not only a testament to the team’s all-round skills but also a reflection of their growing dominance in women’s cricket. Gongadi Trisha, a star of India’s Women’s T20 World Cup victory last year, once again showcased her mettle, leading the charge in critical moments.
With this win, India has announced itself as a formidable force in the Under-19 women’s circuit and will now look to carry this momentum into the U19 Women’s World Cup next year.
