“Jobs and security over Lakshmi Bhandar” as 11 Nandigram families join BJP

In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming elections, Nandigram in East Midnapore has witnessed a shift in voter sentiment, with 11 families from the Shubadite area of Amdabad joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. The move, marked by notable participation of women, highlights a growing preference for employment opportunities and security over financial assistance schemes like Lakshmi Bhandar, indicating changing priorities on the ground.

The joining programme, held in the presence of Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, saw around 25 women along with local leaders switching allegiance. Many of the women were previously employed as mid-day meal cooks at a local primary school and alleged that they were removed from their jobs under pressure, without valid justification. Despite repeated appeals to the district administration, they claimed no action was taken, ultimately prompting their decision to leave the ruling party.

Expressing dissatisfaction with existing welfare measures, the women stated that the monthly financial assistance under Lakshmi Bhandar was insufficient to sustain households amid rising inflation. They emphasized the need for stable employment and a secure environment over temporary monetary support, asserting that economic independence and safety were more critical concerns for their families.

The development has also impacted the local political structure, with leader Subrata Jana returning to the BJP after previously joining the Trinamool Congress. Analysts believe the shift reflects an emerging electoral narrative in Nandigram, where the focus is gradually moving from welfare-centric politics to issues of livelihood and security, posing a potential challenge for the ruling party ahead of the elections.
