Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday announced that Water Metro services will be introduced in Kolkata, marking a major step toward expanding water-based public transportation in the city. Speaking at a press conference in Nabanna, the Chief Minister said that necessary measures are currently being undertaken to facilitate the launch of the project. The announcement places Kolkata among the cities selected for the expansion of the Water Metro network being developed across the country.
The Water Metro service was first introduced in Kochi, Kerala, where the system has already been implemented. Subsequently, the Central Government prepared a plan to introduce Water Metro services in 18 cities across India. In the first phase of the initiative, cities including Guwahati, Srinagar, Patna, Varanasi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Tezpur and Dibrugarh have been included. The Chief Minister stated that steps are now being taken to bring the same mode of transportation to Kolkata as part of this broader national initiative.
