Senior IPS officer Supratim Sarkar formally assumed charge as the new Commissioner of Kolkata Police on Tuesday following a major reshuffle in the state police administration. Sarkar arrived at Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters, where he was welcomed by senior officers.
A 1997-batch IPS officer, Sarkar was earlier serving as Additional Director General of Police, South Bengal. He succeeds Manoj Verma, who has now been appointed as the Security Director. Verma formally handed over charge to Sarkar at Lalbazar.
Soon after taking over, Sarkar made it clear that maintaining law and order in the city would be his top priority. He said ensuring the safety and security of citizens in a metropolitan city like Kolkata is a major challenge.
The new Police Commissioner stated that controlling crime and maintaining peace would be actively addressed by him and his team, signalling an action-oriented approach from the first day in office.
