‘Mid-sea U-turn’: Russian oil tanker ditches China, rushes to India amid global energy crisis: Report

A Russian oil-laden tanker, Aqua Titan, has changed course mid-journey from China and is now heading towards India amid the ongoing global energy crisis. Ship-tracking data indicates the vessel is expected to arrive at New Mangalore port on March 21 carrying Russia’s Urals crude.

The tanker had initially departed from a Baltic Sea port in late January and was bound for Rizhao in China. However, it made a sudden turnaround in Southeast Asian waters in mid-March and redirected its route towards India. The shift comes at a time when global oil supply chains are under strain due to escalating tensions in West Asia.

The rerouting is linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor, following the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. With supply concerns rising, Indian refiners have increased purchases of Russian crude, with multiple tankers reportedly diverting their routes to meet the country’s growing energy demand.
