Ahead of vote counting for the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has issued an extensive and uncompromising set of instructions to party candidates, stressing absolute vigilance, discipline, and presence at counting centres until the entire process is completed. She directed candidates to leave only after counting ends, match VVPAT records before exiting, and keep constant watch on CCTV, calling it a crucial “weapon.” She also warned of possible load-shedding during counting and urged candidates to remain alert under all circumstances.
Banerjee cautioned candidates against being influenced by early trends, stating that Trinamool may initially appear to be losing and that they must not panic. She advised them to ignore media coverage entirely, warning that incorrect news may be broadcast, and strictly prohibited watching television or mobile phones during counting. Candidates were told to carry umbrellas, avoid food distractions even if they have to go without eating for the entire day, and not step out for any reason, including smoking bidi or cigarettes. She also instructed them to inform family members not to call and made it clear that even in case of emergencies or accidents at home, they should not leave the counting centre at that time.
Issuing firm warnings and assurances, Banerjee told candidates not to fear the police or political opponents, asserting that she would deal with all matters after forming the government. She said candidates must not address any officer as “sir,” reminding them that they are “the boss,” and warned against leaving the premises if called outside by anyone. She emphasised that Abhishek Banerjee would be monitoring everyone and that strict consequences would follow for using mobile phones, leaving the centre, or failing to maintain vigilance. She added that candidates who lose will be responsible themselves, while those who remain alert will be personally rewarded. Reaffirming confidence in victory, she declared that the government will be formed by Trinamool, urged candidates to show strength on counting day, and outlined a contingency plan to stage immediate protests at counting centres if irregularities occur, while also asking them to keep some people ready with mobile phones for coordination.
