“No lockdown under consideration,” Govt dismisses rumours amid fuel panic over Iran war

The Centre has firmly dismissed rumours of a Covid-like nationwide lockdown amid panic buying at petrol pumps triggered by the ongoing Middle East crisis. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri clarified that there is no proposal under consideration for any such restriction, urging citizens to remain calm and avoid misinformation.

The speculation gained traction as reports of fuel shortages and LPG supply concerns surfaced following disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor affected by the Iran conflict. This led to long queues at petrol pumps in several areas, intensifying public anxiety over possible supply disruptions.

Reassuring the nation, Puri stated that the government is taking all necessary measures to ensure uninterrupted fuel and energy availability. He emphasised that India remains prepared to tackle emerging challenges and has consistently demonstrated resilience during global uncertainties.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed concerns, highlighting that India is actively sourcing crude oil and gas from multiple channels. He noted that the country has built significant strategic reserves over the years and plans further expansion to strengthen energy security.
