Kolkata’s Nakhoda Mosque Imam and Khatib, Maulana Mohammad Shafiq Qasmi, has made a strong statement against the illegal occupation of footpaths for business purposes, calling it an unjust act. He emphasized that footpaths are designated for pedestrians, and encroaching upon them deprives people of their rightful space. He further warned that such actions make individuals answerable not only to the law but also to Allah.

Speaking on Taaza TV’s special segment during Maha-e-Ramzan, Maulana Qasmi referenced the Quran and Hadith, asserting that forgiveness for such an act is only possible if pedestrians themselves pardon those responsible. He stressed that public spaces should not be misused, as they serve a crucial purpose in maintaining order in society.

Additionally, Maulana Qasmi addressed the issue of offering prayers (namaz) on the road, stating that it too can be considered a violation of public rights. Roads are primarily meant for transportation, and using them for prayers without proper authorization could cause inconvenience to others. He clarified that if such prayers obstruct public movement, those responsible will be held accountable in the eyes of both the law and religion.

However, he also noted that if government authorities grant permission for prayers to be held on the road, then it becomes permissible. Since roads are under the jurisdiction of the government, such permission signifies that the right to pray there has been officially granted.

His statement has sparked discussions on the importance of balancing religious practices with civic responsibilities. Many have praised his call for lawful and considerate use of public spaces, while others believe the issue requires deeper discussion among community leaders and authorities.
