Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who was 80 years old, passed away at his residence in Kolkata. He had been suffering from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and other age-related ailments for a long time.
Bhattacharjee was the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 2000 to 2011 and had been a prominent figure in the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He resigned from active politics in recent years due to his health.
His death marks the end of an era in West Bengal politics, and condolences have been pouring in from various political leaders and his supporters.
