A large quantity of firearms and ammunition was allegedly recovered from a pond in Manipur village of Sandeshkhali during a search operation conducted by the Special Task Force (STF) on Saturday. Acting on intelligence inputs, STF personnel, assisted by local police and central security forces, carried out searches in the area and recovered what investigators described as a concealed stockpile of weapons from the water body.
The operation focused on properties linked to local Trinamool Congress leader Robin Das and his brother Gopal Das. Investigators searched their residence, nearby premises and the adjoining pond during the raid. Authorities suspect the recovered weapons had been stored underwater for an extended period and are examining their possible intended use.
According to investigators, the pond is reportedly owned by the Das brothers, both of whom are currently untraceable. Robin Das and Gopal Das are known locally as close associates of Sheikh Shahjahan. Following the recovery, search operations continued across the locality, while investigators began examining the seized firearms and related materials.
Local residents have previously levelled allegations of intimidation and abuse of influence against the two brothers, including accusations of targeting BJP supporters. The recovery drew large crowds to the area as news of the operation spread. Authorities are continuing to investigate how long the weapons had been stored in the pond and whether they were linked to organized criminal activities or plans to create unrest.
