Bharatiya Janata Party MP Locket Chatterjee on Thursday claimed that Bengal stopped her from participating in the Hanuman Jayanti procession in her Hooghly constituency, which was in the news due to violence during Ram Navami celebrations last week.
“Does the Bengal police have permission to address a local MP as an 'outsider' and stop her religious events? Under the Mamata Raj government, the act of stopping a local MP from visiting her constituency and participating in religious functions is tantamount to hurting people's sentiments,” she tweeted.
“It is the responsibility of the state government to maintain law and order. The Mamata government has clearly failed on this front,” claimed Chatterjee.
West Bengal is celebrating Hanuman Jayanti under strict vigil by the state police and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF). Central forces were deployed in parts of Kolkata, Hooghly and Barrackpore to help the police maintain peace.
The Central Force were deployed following the orders of the Calcutta High Court, which asked the state government to seek their deployment in the wake of violent clashes that took place in Hooghly and Howrah on the occasion of Ram Navami.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited various parts of Kolkata in the morning, supervised security arrangements and interacted with people. "People are working together. I think today will be a very happy day. Bengal will set a trend of peace and harmony in the society," he told reporters while visiting Ekbalpore area.
The Trinamool Congress said the opposition BJP will have to behave like 'good boys' during the celebrations. TMC general secretary Kunal Ghosh accused the BJP, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and their affiliates of creating trouble during the Ram Navami celebrations. "But today, when the central forces are on the alert, they cannot be involved in any such mishaps and have to act like good boys," he said.
