'Swami Vivekananda vs Syama Prasad': Sealdah station to get a new name!

A new political controversy has emerged in West Bengal as the BJP and TMC are locked in a verbal battle over a proposed name change for Sealdah station. The debate started after the BJP suggested renaming the station after Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The TMC, in turn, rejected this proposal and instead put forward the name of Swami Vivekananda, reigniting a familiar political pattern of renaming public places.

The issue came to light on Sunday during the inauguration of the new AC local train service on the Ranaghat-Sealdah route. Speaking at the event, BJP MP and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar proposed the name change. He said, "We know that the name of a railway station largely depends on the state government's proposal. Today, I appeal to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to propose to the central government that this station be named after Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. At one time, thousands of refugees came to this station, and the person who worked most for them was Syama Prasad Mookerjee. So, the station should be named after him."

Majumdar’s proposal immediately drew a sharp reaction from the Trinamool Congress. Responding to the suggestion, TMC's state general secretary Kunal Ghosh, speaking at an event in Chinsurah, offered a counter-proposal. Ghosh stated, "Syama Prasad Mookerjee is a respected person. There is a port named after him, so why Sealdah station? The Sealdah station should be named after Swami Vivekananda. He returned to Sealdah after his historic speech at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago. Swami Vivekananda came to Sealdah station after conquering the world. If there is a need to change the name, it should be in his honor."

The debate has drawn comparisons to the frequent name changes of stations and well-known places in states like Uttar Pradesh. Many are questioning the necessity of changing the name of one of the country's busiest railway stations, which has held its identity for decades. The issue has become another point of contention between the two major political parties in West Bengal, each trying to assert its own ideological and historical narrative.

Observers believe this is a strategic move by both parties to connect with their voter bases and project their chosen historical figures as more deserving of honor. The BJP, by invoking Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, aims to appeal to a specific segment of its supporters and highlight its historical roots. The TMC, by championing Swami Vivekananda, seeks to align with a universally revered Bengali icon, reinforcing its cultural and regional identity.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether the state government will act on either proposal or if the matter will remain a political talking point. For now, the Sealdah station name change issue has become yet another flashpoint in the ongoing political rivalry between the BJP and the TMC, overshadowing the new AC train service's launch.
