A recent maternal death at Medinipur Medical College in West Bengal has drawn attention to the issue of contaminated saline. The incident, attributed to the use of infected Ringer Lactate saline, has raised questions about the state’s regulatory oversight. The death, which occurred in the gynecology department, has sparked political reactions, with opposition leaders calling for accountability at the highest levels.

West Bengal’s Health Minister Mamata Banerjee and Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam have been criticized for their handling of the situation. According to reports, Ringer Lactate saline manufactured by West Bengal Pharmaceuticals was being used in hospitals across the state even after the product had been banned due to safety concerns. The state government imposed the ban after similar incidents in other regions, including a case in Karnataka, where contaminated saline led to a patient's death. However, despite the ban, Ringer Lactate continued to be administered for over a month in West Bengal, with no immediate measures to enforce the prohibition.

Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari has raised concerns about the lack of action by the state government. He pointed out that there were no official directives issued to stop the use of Ringer Lactate saline before the end of December 2024, even though the ban had been in place. Adhikari emphasized that the failure to act on the ban was a serious oversight, especially after the Karnataka government's warning on December 13, following a similar incident.

Adhikari has called for a thorough investigation into the matter, urging the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to examine the actions of Health Minister Mamata Banerjee and Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam. He has demanded that the CID take immediate action and arrest the officials for what he sees as negligence in handling the case. The incident has led to heightened scrutiny of the state’s health administration, with calls for a broader investigation into the use of potentially unsafe medical supplies.
