Distribution of prasad from Digha’s Jagannath Temple began on Saturday across various areas of Hooghly district through the state’s public distribution system. The initiative, carried out under the West Bengal government’s instructions, includes packets containing one gaja, one peda, and a photo of Lord Jagannath. These are being given to ration card holders through local ration shops.

According to Srirampur Town Trinamool Congress President Santosh (Pappu Singh), the area has 32 ration shops, and the daily target is to distribute prasad to 2,000 to 2,500 families. Rishra Municipality Chairman Vijay Sagar Mishra stated that the distribution started as per the Chief Minister’s directives and is initially covering around 14,500 families. He added that those without ration cards would be provided prasad at a later stage.

Hooghly District BJP President Gautam Chatterjee criticised the move, stating, “We do not consider this as prasad. The Trinamool Congress is doing politics in the name of prasad.” No clarification or counterstatement from the state government has been issued regarding the BJP’s allegations.
