Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday mocked the turnout at a protest programme led by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, claiming that only a handful of party legislators and MPs attended the event at Y-Channel. Speaking during an administrative visit to Tarakeswar, Adhikari said the party’s organisational strength had weakened significantly, remarking that “the party has become like Falta.” He also stated that he had been informed that only three MPs and six MLAs were present at the programme.

The protest programme was among the first major political events organised by Mamata Banerjee after the Assembly election defeat. The gathering came shortly after a Trinamool legislative party meeting at Kalighat reportedly witnessed low attendance. According to party sources, only around 20 of the party’s MLAs attended that meeting, leading to its cancellation. Tuesday’s demonstration was viewed as an attempt to showcase support within the organisation following recent political setbacks.

Several senior leaders, including Firhad Hakim, Madan Mitra and Biman Banerjee, were seen on the protest stage alongside Mamata Banerjee. However, the absence of many younger leaders and legislators drew attention amid continuing discussions about internal differences within the party. Questions have also been raised in recent days regarding attendance at party programmes and the participation of elected representatives in organisational activities.

When journalists informed Adhikari that Abhishek Banerjee had reportedly contacted MLAs to encourage attendance at the protest, the Chief Minister responded by referring to reports about Abhishek’s health condition. Adhikari remarked that he had heard Abhishek was unwell and receiving saline treatment, questioning whether someone in that condition could make repeated phone calls. The comments came as discussions continued over the party’s internal situation following the election results.

From the protest stage, Mamata Banerjee continued her criticism of the BJP and accused the ruling party of attempting to weaken the opposition by influencing Trinamool legislators and MPs. She declared that her party would continue its political struggle and alleged that efforts were being made to lure or pressure elected representatives. The programme took place amid ongoing speculation regarding divisions within the Trinamool Congress and public disagreements involving several party leaders.
