West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made a strong announcement in response to the RG Kar Medical College incident, demanding the death penalty for the perpetrator. In a determined move, Banerjee declared that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) would organize protests across the state against the BJP and CPI(M) for allegedly defaming Bengal.
The protests are scheduled for August 17, with rallies to be held in every block, ward, and municipality from 2 pm to 4 pm. The following day, August 18, will see dharnas in all blocks from 10 am to 6 pm. Talking at a rally, the Chief Minister claimed that opposition parties wanted to 'wrest power' from her by organizing a ‘Bangladesh-like movement' in the state.
“Instead of standing with the (woman’s) family, CPI(M) and BJP are indulging in cheap politics. They think they can do a Bangladesh here. But let me tell you, I am not greedy for power,” she said. Mamata added, “I have been monitoring the case the whole night. I was in touch with cops till the cremation was done. Cops escorted her family, police arrested the killer in 12 hours.”
“For any investigation, you need to give time. I had set a deadline of Sunday. You cannot take action against anyone without proper investigation. I respect both senior and junior doctors. I cannot arrest people without proper investigation,” she added. Talking about the central agency taking over the probe, Mamata Banerjee said, “We will completely follow High Court's guidelines and we are cooperating with CBI.”
