Kolkata Municipal Corporation board dissolved, Smita Pandey takes charge as 'administrator'
The Calcutta High Court has declined an urgent hearing plea seeking expedited listing of a petition challenging the arrest of former minister Sujit Bose in connection with an urban civic recruitment scam. The court questioned the necessity of granting immediate consideration in the matter and sought justification for the urgency.
Sujit Bose was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on May 11 in connection with the case. His legal counsel has filed a petition challenging the legality of the arrest and requested that it be taken up on an urgent basis before the court.
During the hearing, Justice Krishna Rao questioned the need for haste in seeking to quash the arrest and observed that if the arrest has already been carried out, the appropriate remedy would be to pursue a bail application. The court further noted that the grounds of urgency had not been sufficiently established. In response, the petitioner’s counsel argued that the challenge specifically concerns the legality of the arrest itself, stating that the grounds for arrest were not clearly disclosed at the time of detention.
