1.1 Crore take holy dip at Gangasagar 2025; 6 died, over 6,000 missing people reunited

The annual Gangasagar Mela concluded at 6:58 a.m. on Wednesday, marking the end of a grand spiritual gathering during which over 1.1 crore pilgrims took a holy dip in the Ganges in pursuit of salvation. West Bengal's Power Minister Arup Biswas announced the end of the mela during a press conference at the fair office. Despite the official end of the Mela, pilgrims continue to arrive at Sagar Island.

The smooth organization of this year’s event was attributed to the active involvement of ministers, district administration, police, and voluntary organizations under the guidance of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. However, the fair was not without its challenges. Six pilgrims, including four from Uttar Pradesh, succumbed to illnesses during the event. Among them, an 85-year-old named Natha from Uttar Pradesh passed away on Wednesday. Additionally, nine critically ill pilgrims were airlifted to Kolkata hospitals for treatment.

This year’s Gangasagar Mela emphasized environmental sustainability. 100 solar-powered lights illuminated Sagar Island, and four plastic bottle-cutting machines were installed to manage pollution. Over 3,000 beach guards ensured cleanliness, while 1,123 metric tons of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste were collected and processed through three waste management units. About 1,53,000 liters of herbal disinfectant spray were used in toilets and dustbins to maintain hygiene.

Law enforcement played a crucial role in maintaining order despite the massive crowds. Authorities arrested 895 individuals for various offenses and reunited 6,627 missing persons with their families. “The opposition is trying to tarnish the glory of the fair, but the success of this event speaks for itself,” Minister Arup Biswas remarked.

Dignitaries such as Public Health Minister Pulak Roy, Fire Minister Sujit Basu, and Transport Minister Snehashis Chakraborty were present at the press conference, alongside Sundarbans Police Superintendent Koteshwar Rao. The Gangasagar cleaning drive, aimed at restoring the coastal environment, is set to begin on Thursday.

Gangasagar Mela 2024 not only highlighted spiritual devotion but also showcased the state’s commitment to environmental responsibility and safety measures, setting a high benchmark for future events.
