In a tragic incident on Sunday afternoon, a van carrying thirteen people fell into a well in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur district, leading to the death of ten individuals. The accident occurred at Kachariya village, prompting an urgent response from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other rescue teams.
Officials reported that the driver of the van apparently lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and plunge into a well that contained poisonous gas. The presence of toxic fumes made the rescue operation more challenging and dangerous for the teams involved.
Four people managed to swim to safety and were later hospitalized. In a heartbreaking turn, a local villager who attempted to rescue others also lost his life due to exposure to the poisonous environment inside the well.
Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda confirmed that the priority remains on concluding the rescue operation safely. He emphasized the dangerous conditions, noting that the poisonous gas in the well posed a severe risk to both victims and rescuers.
DIG Manoj Kumar Singh stated that nine passengers from the van have died along with the brave rescuer, bringing the total death toll to ten. The search and retrieval of the remaining bodies was expected to conclude within half an hour.
The entire village has been plunged into mourning as rescue efforts near completion. Authorities have assured that a detailed investigation will be conducted to understand how the vehicle lost control and why such a hazardous well was left unsecured near the road.
