Late Thursday night, a tragic accident claimed the lives of 10 workers near Katka village in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district. A speeding truck collided with a tractor carrying workers who were returning home from their jobs in Badhohi district. In addition to the 10 fatalities, three others were severely injured and have been taken to Varanasi Trauma Centre for critical care.
The collision occurred when an out-of-control truck first struck a motorbike before ramming into the tractor, sending it into a nearby drain. Eyewitnesses described the impact as so forceful that the truck mounted another vehicle already in the drain, exacerbating the disaster. The workers who lost their lives have been identified as residents of Mirzamurad in Varanasi district.
The accident prompted a swift response from local authorities. Senior officials, including the Superintendent of Police (SP), arrived at the scene to lead the rescue operations, which lasted through the night. Using cranes, the damaged vehicles were recovered from the drain, while police continued their investigation into the cause of the crash.
Following the accident, residents blocked the road in protest. SP Abhinandan arrived on-site to address their concerns, and traffic was later resumed after calming the crowd.
Condoling the loss of lives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief on X, emphasizing that the local administration is working to help the victims and their families in every possible way.
