Massive landslides in West Sikkim district have damaged nearly 100 houses and swept away bridges. The downpour caused flash flooding along the upper reaches of the College Khola valley, causing maximum impact at Simphok, where a large bridge was swept away, they said.
Meanwhile, the Indian Army has rescued 300 more tourists stranded in North Sikkim district due to landslides and roadblocks, an official statement said. Dentam sub-division under Gyalshing district also bore the brunt of the landslides as houses and roads were damaged, officials said.
Agricultural land and livestock were also affected. A suspension bridge over College Khola in Lower Sapung was also washed away due to mudslides, they said. Authorities have provided immediate assistance to those affected, officials said, adding that work has begun to restore roads and bridges.
According to the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA),Till Saturday, more than 37,500 people were affected by the flood in eight districts of Assam.
The administration runs one relief camp, which currently houses nine people, in addition to 16 relief distribution centers in three districts. Currently, 142 villages and 1510 are under water. In Assam, 98 hectares of agricultural land was damaged, ASDMA said.
Massive erosion was witnessed in Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, South Salmara and Udalguri districts.
