100 new mobile medical vans to strengthen healthcare in Kolkata slums

The state government is set to deploy 100 new mobile medical vans across Kolkata to expand free healthcare services in slum areas and improve access to primary medical care for economically disadvantaged residents. According to health department sources, the initiative by the State Urban Development Agency is aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery in underserved urban communities by bringing medical services directly to residents.

Each mobile medical unit will be equipped with a semi-automatic analyser, cell counter, ECG machine, ultrasonography system and a portable handheld X-ray machine, enabling services comparable to those available at a regular clinic. The vans will provide around 35 diagnostic tests, including haemoglobin, blood sugar, malaria detection and pregnancy tests. Pregnant women will also have access to ultrasonography services, while patients with complex medical conditions will be able to consult specialist doctors through an onboard telemedicine facility.

A health department official said the programme is intended to improve access to quality healthcare for people living in slum areas who often do not receive adequate medical services. Another doctor associated with the initiative said the deployment of 100 additional mobile units would help address challenges related to maternal healthcare by making specialist consultation and diagnostic facilities more accessible within these communities.
