A court in Nadia has sentenced three convicts, including the son of a Trinamool leader, to life imprisonment in the Hanskhali gang rape and murder case. The Ranaghat Sub-Divisional Court delivered the verdict on Tuesday, a day after convicting nine accused in the case.
Those sentenced to life imprisonment are Sohel alias Braj Gayali, son of Trinamool leader Samarendra Gayali, along with Prabhakar Poddar and Ranjit Malik. All three were held guilty of gang rape. One more accused was sentenced to five years in prison for related offences.
The court also found Samarendra Gayali, Dipta Gayali and another accused guilty of tampering with evidence. Neighbour Angshuman Bagchi was convicted of threatening the victim’s family, forcing them to cremate the minor’s body and participating in the conspiracy. He was sentenced to three years in prison.
Two convicted minors were granted bail by the court. The victim’s family broke down in tears inside the courtroom while hearing the sentences, bringing an emotional close to a long and painful legal battle.
