A 17-year-old boy, Sudipto Pandit from Basanti Tala in Kanchrapara, died after being allegedly beaten in a mango orchard in Shibdaspur, Naihati. According to police, Sudipto was returning from a function with friends when they stopped at an orchard to collect mangoes lying under a tree. Sheikh Farhad Mondal, the leaseholder and guard of the orchard, allegedly caught Sudipto and physically assaulted him. His friends fled the spot. Sudipto was taken to Naihati S.G. Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The Shibdaspur police arrested Sheikh Farhad Mondal soon after the incident. Police have initiated a case and are conducting further investigation. A police picket has been set up in the area to prevent unrest. Officers are also verifying the ownership and lease details of the mango orchard where the incident occurred.
Tension escalated in the area on Friday morning after a group of people allegedly set fire to the accused’s mango warehouse. Firefighters reached the spot and doused the flames. Police have deployed additional personnel to maintain order. The area remained tense throughout the day, and movement was being closely monitored by local authorities.
