At least 18 people were killed and six others critically injured in a powerful explosion at a cracker manufacturing unit in Vetlapalem village of Samarlakota mandal in Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada district on Saturday. State Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha confirmed the toll, stating that she was on her way to the spot as rescue operations continued. The intensity of the blast was so severe that bodies were flung into nearby paddy fields, according to police officials.
The explosion occurred at Surya Fireworks, where up to 20 workers were reportedly present at the time of the incident. Horrific scenes unfolded in the lush green fields surrounding the unit as locals assisted authorities in shifting bodies using makeshift sheets. Officials at Kakinada Government General Hospital said seven patients with burn injuries ranging from 90 to 100 per cent were admitted and are undergoing treatment. The condition of the critically injured remains serious as medical teams continue emergency care. Authorities are working to identify the victims and inform their families.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, calling the incident extremely painful. He said he had spoken to officials and directed them to provide immediate assistance to the affected families. Senior officials and ministers have been instructed to visit the accident site as rescue and relief operations continue.
