19 NHPC workers trapped as landslide blocks power project tunnels in Pithoragarh

At least 19 workers of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) are trapped inside the power house of Dhauliganga Power Project in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, after a landslide blocked both normal and emergency tunnels. Rescue operations are underway with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel coordinating with NHPC engineers to ensure worker safety and tunnel stability.

Heavy rainfall in the region caused the landslide, which also disrupted major transport routes. The Gangotri and Yamunotri National Highways were blocked at Dharasu, Netala, Charethi, and Bhatwari due to fallen boulders and debris. Authorities reported that the route between Harsil and Dharali, as well as the stretch from Dharali to Gangotri, remain operational for vehicles. Efforts by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are ongoing to clear debris and restore full connectivity.

The Uttarakhand Disaster Management authorities stated, "The Gangotri National Highway is currently blocked at multiple points due to debris and boulders. Efforts are underway to restore the route while prioritizing safety." Locals have been advised to exercise caution in landslide-prone zones. Rescue teams continue monitoring the situation, and updates on the trapped workers are being provided in real-time by officials.
