A total of 19 suicides have been recorded in the Kolkata Metro since 2020, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. In response to a parliamentary question by South Kolkata’s Trinamool MP Mala Roy, he stated that one suicide occurred in 2020, none in 2021, five in 2022, and four in 2023. The highest number was reported in 2024, with seven suicides. Additionally, two suicide cases have been recorded in the first two months of 2025.
To address safety concerns, sliding platform doors have been installed at all 12 stations on the Kolkata Metro’s Green Line. However, these doors are not yet available at other metro corridors, where passenger accessibility to tracks remains open. While no further plans were specified, the Railways has acknowledged the rise in suicide cases and its impact on metro services.
Metro suicides often lead to service disruptions and emergency response interventions. Kolkata Metro authorities have taken measures such as increasing security personnel and surveillance. However, concerns remain about the lack of physical barriers at older stations, where access to tracks remains unrestricted. No additional safety measures have been confirmed for other metro lines.
