2,407 companies of central forces deployed for phase 1 polling in Bengal, Murshidabad tops list

The Election Commission has intensified security arrangements for the first phase of polling in West Bengal, deploying 2,407 companies of central armed forces across multiple districts to ensure peaceful voting on April 23. The large-scale deployment is aimed at maintaining law and order and preventing any disruption during the electoral process.

According to official data, Murshidabad district has received the highest security cover with 316 companies of central forces. The district has been divided into Murshidabad Police District and Jangipur Police District, with 240 companies deployed in the former and 76 in the latter, reflecting heightened vigilance in the region.

Officials said Purba Medinipur ranks second in terms of deployment with 273 companies of central forces. The district is politically sensitive due to the presence of high-profile constituencies, including Nandigram, which has been a focal point in previous elections.

Large-scale deployment has also been planned across other districts in the state. West Medinipur, Bankura, Birbhum, Malda, Purulia, Cooch Behar, and both North and South Dinajpur districts will see significant numbers of central forces stationed to oversee polling arrangements and prevent incidents of violence or intimidation.

In addition, police commissionerates in Siliguri and Asansol-Durgapur, along with districts like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar, will also be under security coverage. The Election Commission has stated that route marches are already underway, and all forces are expected to be fully deployed before polling day to ensure a smooth electoral exercise.
