Two senior students of the University Institute of Technology (UIT) under Burdwan University were arrested on charges of ragging and assaulting a second-year student inside the AGC Bose Boys’ Hostel. The accused have been identified as Piyush Kumar, a resident of Bhadhokhana under Mufassil police station in Nawada, Bihar, and Saurabh Kumar, a resident of Bajedpur under Patepur police station in Vaishali, Bihar.
The incident took place when second-year student Aniruddha Sharma was allegedly attacked with iron rods and sticks by a group of senior students. According to the complaint, Aniruddha sustained serious injuries to his head. Other students who tried to intervene were also reportedly assaulted. One of the students sustained a severe injury on his hand. Several others were also injured during the scuffle.
Following the complaint, police arrested the two named accused from the Golapbagh crossing in Bardhaman. They have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code related to assault and causing grievous hurt. During the investigation, police recovered an iron rod that was allegedly used in the attack. The arrested individuals were produced before the Bardhaman CJM court, which remanded them to two days of police custody.
The complaint also alleged that second-year students had been facing repeated mental and physical harassment from seniors over a period of time. The complainant mentioned that the hostel authorities were informed about such incidents earlier but no action was taken. The accused students were allegedly part of a group of third- and fourth-year students who had been harassing juniors.
Police said efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other students involved in the incident. The investigation is focused on collecting further evidence and statements from witnesses. An official case has been registered and law enforcement is in the process of verifying the sequence of events and roles of all individuals connected to the incident.
