Amid the ongoing unrest in Murshidabad over the Waqf Amendment Act, the police have arrested two individuals accused of hacking a father and son to death. The shocking incident, which added a chilling layer to the already tense situation, occurred in Shamsherganj. On Tuesday, ADG South Bengal Supratim Sarkar confirmed the arrests at a press conference held at the local police station.
The arrested men, identified as Kalu Nadab and Dildar Nawab, are brothers hailing from the Jigri area of Shamsherganj. One was apprehended from Murarai in Birbhum, while the other was caught near the Bangladesh border in Suti. Police sources revealed that both were planning to flee across the border to escape arrest.
The brutal murder took place during violent protests that engulfed parts of Murshidabad. A mob allegedly dragged Har Govinda Das and his son Chandan Das from their home and hacked them to death. The attack, reportedly carried out by a group of miscreants under the guise of protest, shocked the community. ADG Law and Order Javed Shamim earlier confirmed that the case would be investigated separately with utmost seriousness.
A special investigation team was quickly formed to probe the double murder. The team includes members from the district police, local police stations, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the Special Task Force (STF). Based on information shared by the victims' families and insights from CCTV footage, a list of suspects was created. The swift police action led to the arrest of the two key accused within 24 hours of launching the operation.
At the press briefing, ADG Supratim Sarkar stated, “We have examined extensive CCTV footage and worked closely with intelligence units. These arrests are just the beginning. Others involved in the incident are being tracked and will be arrested soon.”
The unrest in Murshidabad, which erupted over demands to repeal the Waqf Act, has led to multiple instances of violence, public clashes, and now, a gruesome murder. The police are maintaining tight vigilance in the region and have assured the public that justice will be served.
