Two workers were killed and four others sustained serious injuries in an explosion at Hi-Tech Gas Private Limited, an oxygen cylinder filling unit in Phase 9 of Mohali's Industrial Area, on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred around 9 am while workers were filling and loading medical oxygen cylinders.
The blast completely destroyed a major portion of the factory, with body parts of the deceased scattered across the premises. Fragments of the exploded cylinder were found in Kambali village, located nearby, and several surrounding buildings were also damaged by the shockwave. Fire brigade units, police, and ambulances reached the scene promptly, and a rescue operation was carried out.
The deceased have been identified as Asif, a resident of Lucknow who had been working at the unit for approximately 1.5 years, and Davinder. All four injured workers were shifted to the Civil Hospital in Mohali. Officials stated that their conditions are critical and under close observation. “Two people have died in the explosion, and four others are seriously injured. We are currently investigating the exact cause of the blast,” said a fire officer at the site.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Damandeep Kaur and DSP (City-2) Harsimran Singh Bal visited the location and confirmed the timing of the explosion and subsequent actions. “We received a call at around 9.25 am. Our team reached the site immediately and rescued the injured. The investigation is underway, and all further action will be taken as per the law,” said Bal. The factory, operational since 1993, is known for filling medical-grade oxygen cylinders.
